Welcome to the Dubouzet Family History Project

November 19th, 2008 · 18 Comments

My name is Chris and I live in Portland, Oregon, USA.  My wife is descended from Emilio Dubouzet of Vito, Negros Occidental.  We have been researching the Dubouzet family trying to trace its roots back to France in the 1800′s.

The story that I’ve heard so far is that Candido Dubouzet (most likely Candid du Bouzet in France) was the French Military Attaché to the Spanish Government in the Philippines.  He was married to a Spanish woman named Vicenta Valdez — instead of going back to France, Candido and Vicenta decided to stay in the Philippines and start a family.  Fast forward 150 years and the Dubouzet family is very large and spread out around the globe.

If you have any information that relates to family history, I would love to learn more about it.  Feel free to comment on this blog and share what you know with the rest of the Dubouzet family.

Hi there Chris, i am overwhelmed upon hearing from my sister about this site. My father always tells us the story how the dubouzet’s came about in the Philippines. It all begun through our great grandfather named Perico duBouzet (i dont know if i spelled his name right but im sure the family name was originally spelled that way, like duPont) during the French Revolution. He was the first duBouzet to have stepped in Vito, Sagay, Negros Occidental.

    Mr. Chris,

Glad you started this project. I was hoping to start one myself. At any rate, I’ve heard of far flung relatives dispersed somewhere in Western Mindanao, my family in Northeastern Mindanao, and yes, the main line living in Negros. That’s what I’ve heard so far.

I’d sure appreciate to hear replies from you.

Hello , my late grandfather is Capt. Jose Dubouzet, from Davao City, I originally grew up in Butuan city Philippines, but I have been living in New York when I was 10 in 1992. I really don’t know anything much about the history but thats pretty cool to hear that we had an ancestor who was a “French Military Attaché to the Spanish Government in the Philippines”. I was in the US. Marines for 6 years and my brother in Texas was in the Army for about 4 years. I would like to know more if you have any more info. Thanks

Hi there! My great grandfather’s a Dubouzet from France who came to the Philippines according from my mom. He had a daughter named Vicenta Dubouzet, my grandmother, she’s 90+ now and was raised in Bacolod City. My mom (Emma Dubouzet Sunpongco) used to see her often up until last month in Manila but apparently my grandma’s now back in Mindanao (in Dipolog City) so really can’t ask her about it for the mean time. Calling is not an option either since she has hearing problems already. But anyway, more likely than not, we just might really be relatives! Let’s keep in touch okay?

haha! funny but I just noticed that even my grandmother’s name (Vicenta Dubouzet) is the same as Vicenta Valdez…I think my grandma was born on 1913…she might be a direct descendant of candido and vicenta…

Hi there again! According from my mom, my great grandfather’s name is Jose Dubouzet Sr and married to Teodora Javellana-Dubouzet. They had a daughter, Vicenta Javellana Dubouzet, my grandmother, who was born on September 1916 and was raised in Bacolod City. They had another daughter named Paquita Javellana Dubouzet who was the eldest. Jose Dubouzet Sr remarried again after Teodora passed away and had two other sons, namely, Jose Jr and Marcos. Their mother’s name is Trinidad Javellana Dubouzet and she is the youngest sister of Teodora.

The question now on my mind is – who is Lolo Jose Sr.’s father? What is his name? My mother does not know but dating back to what you (Chris) and the others (from the Dubouzet message board) said that Candido Dubouzet and his brother (what is the brother’s name) came to the Philippines around 1860-1870s and that my grandma was born on 1916, it can be hypothetically concluded that my great grandfather Jose Sr is an offspring of either one of them? Isn’t it so?

    hi chris, & hi mai.

The brother was married in samar. and her sister was also married but according to my father the children of his lola were all christened with the Dubouzet family name. It was a Priest Father Nolan who brought the 7 brothers in Negros Occidental they settle in sagay and vito.Correct me if im wrong. I’ve heard lately that one of my fathers half sister tiya paz have more knowledge and i hope she can contribution this to everybody.

    hi chris and mai

My mother is Paz J. Dubouzet from Negros Occidental , the youngest child of 7 children. His father is Pedro Dubouzet.. my mother told me that my grandfather is known as Don Perico due to his nose.

am so happy to hear about this project.. in fact my sister Virgielyn Dubouzet Cadao has been into this.. she met a lot of Dubouzet here in Visayas and Mindanao whom we haven’t known before and who also don’t have any idea of its roots.

Glad to hear about this. I’ll then spread this to my relatives here especially the eldest sister of my mom… and my other aunts as well who are in Negros Occidental
